The Highway 60 corridor stays open in winter and a few trails are track-set for classic skiing. Book accommodation in Huntsville, Dwight or Whitney early, and check which trails are groomed and whether the visitor centre is open. Carry water, food and a map; winter days are short.

  1. Day 1Sort out permits and equipment, then ski one of the groomed corridor trails suited to your ability. Stop at the visitor centre or a lookout if it is open before dark.
  2. Day 2Snowshoe a shorter trail in the morning, watching for animal tracks, then warm up over lunch before the drive home. Grooming and trail openings change week to week in winter.
